But I can add another dimension to all of this.
Self-awareness is a good thing. A very good thing. Self-awareness is knowing how you work, what you like, what you don’t like, what pushes your buttons, and most importantly … just how far you can or are willing to go into the fray. Any fray.
Psychologists have two words to define that: healthy boundaries.
Okay, I’m no psychologist and you may want to look this up for the official definition, but the gist of it is … knowing where you end and where others begin. It’s knowing your capable of, your limits, what you’ll participate in and what you won’t. It’s knowing which battles are yours (or those belonging to other people), the ones you’re equipped for (or are inadequately prepared for), and the ones where it’s best to not get involved for whatever reason.
I can’t stess this enough. We all have strengths, weaknesses, and limitations. Wise is the man/woman who knows how they differ. Sometimes we have to be reminded that we can’t run before we can walk before we can crawl.
For anyone reading this, if situations move you to the point of taking action, please, may your actions be of a constructive, well-thought out and executed in a loving manner (note, I did not say or imply passive) as opposed to a destructive, erratic, and hateful manner. And may it also be done in a manner that fits who you are.
And remember to slide one another some grace. Some room to grow. You guys have so very much heart and a desire to do the right, but don’t forget we’re all not at the same point in our journeys. Hopefully, we’ll all get there at exactly the right moment.
