James, thank you. I’m trying to reach people with the voice that’s most resonated with readers. I can be a “bad ass,” but that doesn’t work so well for me. I’ve ripped a person or two a new one — it’s nothing I’m proud of, and it didn’t add any positive to my overall message.

All of this — I like to think of activists’ work as tending a garden. Some of us are planting seeds, some tilling the soil, others pulling weeds, others fertilizing, and some fending off the animals who’d gobble up the seedlings. It takes lots of different people to do all the jobs necessary in caring for a garden. Seeds don’t grow without tending on many fronts. You get my drift. Any of us could feign our way through someone else’s duties, but it wouldn’t be the same. It’s not being true to who we’re created to be. We’re all in need of different messengers with different messages at different times in our lives. I think if that weren’t the case . . . we’d all be the same. And how boring would that be?

Keep up the good work.
