Exactly, Clay, how do we respond? It is easy to become paralyzed and confused. We don’t know what to do in a situation like this because we’ve never had a situation like this. We are making it up as we go.

Dennett, firmly — with respect and in love. That’s how we respond. Most people think that means being mealy-mouthed pushover. Nothing could be further from the truth. You can make your point in a succinct manner without attacking or being brutish. People can speak truth to those who are willing to listen, and forego those who aren’t interested in what you have to say. But it all comes down to being aware. If the situation arises and you compelled to speak up or write or start a petition or to take any action, by all means do so. You’ll know when the time is right. 😉
